Introduction to the seminar
This seminar series will serve as an introduction to archaeological chemistry and focus on cutting edge bio-molecular applications and solutions to solve archaeological and modern question related to nutrition, health, migration, forensics and chronology. The techniques and methods will be reviewed and particular attention will be focused on developing research projects related to archaeological as well as modern nutritional and bio-medical studies in China. Specific topics will include: bio-molecular markers that can be recovered from modern and ancient humans and animals, laboratory methods for the extraction and isolation of the bone protein collagen, hair analysis, stable isotope ratio analysis (e.g. carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, hydrogen), amino acid isotopic analysis, organic residues, trace element analysis, ancient DNA, and radiocarbon dating. This is an introductory seminar series that will be of benefit to individuals studying: anthropology/archaeology, chemistry, biology, nutrition and medicine. The class will be conducted in English and will serve as an important resource for students interested in practicing their listening and speaking English skills.
